To summarize the article, or video, Gartner has recently published a list of predictions for IT trends that will take off in the next 3 – 5 years. I will highlight the point, and give my own view on it.
1. Apple will double their market share by 2011 [To 15%]
I most certainly hope they don’t. I think that apple has NO business on the desktops of anymore that 5% of users. I personally view apples as the Hummers of the IT industry: You only use them if you have to. there are a few reasons that I don’t like apple hardware/software, and I will bring these to light soon in a blog post. (probably titled Why I hate apple).
2. Business users and road warriors will leave their notebooks at home for other devices.
This one, I can see happening. As a large chunk of software now becomes server-run, rather than workstation-run, devices will probably become smaller since they wont need as much processing power or storage space. one major roadblock to this however, will be the presence of mobile high speed internet connections. Secondly, laptops, have the advantage of not being too small. Portability is one thing, but if you cant see the words you are typing, or have to type with index fingers, you may find there is such a thing as too small.
3. By 2012, one third of business software spending will be for subscription rather than licensing.
This is an easy one. In businesses YES, at home NO.
I have just taken 3 of the points that were highlighted on the article. If you want to read the complete thing just go here
